P365-Day56: Sun Temple, Katarmal-Almora

Katarmal is located at a distance of 1.5 km from Kosi village and 12 km from the district centre, Almora & 17 km from Ranikhet. Located at a height of 2116 meters above sea level, it is well connected by a metalled road.


This rare Surya temple of Kosi-Katarmal was constructed by the Katyuri King "Katarmalla" in the 9th century.  The temple has 44 smaller temples around the main deity of Surya (Sun), which called as Burhadita or Vraddhaditya.

The temple was declared a monument of national importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites by Archaeological Survey of India.
